Switchgrass for Bioenergy Equations Available Soon!

The NIRS Consortium has been working with Ken Vogel from the USDA-ARS Forage and Bioenergy Research Unit, 137 Keim Hall, University of Nebraska, Lincoln, NE 68583 to transfer ARS NIRS calibrations for Swithchgrass bioenergy predictions to the NIRSC.  In turn NIRSC would make the calibrations available to any NIRSC member requesting them at no charge. Read more about the agreement from the ARS website.  This agreement was signed between ARS and NIRSC as of 7-28-11 and the calibrations will be continued to be supported with samples and chemistry from ARS for 5 years.  NIRSC will have the opportunity to add samples and update the equation.

The equations and supporting data have been sent to NIRSC for preparation.  The next step is to do some tests on the calibrations, which will include sending it out to 2 test labs within the NIRSC that have switchgrass samples on hand.  After these initial tests and finding how the calibrations perform, NIRSC will then make the equations available to all NIRSC members.  We hope to have this accomplished sometime in September, 2011.

A press release from ARS was made on August 18th, 2011 and can be viewed from the ARS website in two articles.  See the press release and the magazine story. A copy of the research paper by Vogel et al., 2011 is available to NIRSC members upon request.  Just contact the business office (contact information below). The paper lists all of the parameters tested for Switchgrass biomass composition, methods, and statistics that Ken Vogel and his lab developed.

2011 Equation Updates Available for NIRSC Forage Products Now!

Equation updates are ready to be released to NIRSC members now.  Updates are available for Alfalfa Hay, Grass Hay, Mixed Haylage, Fermented Corn Silage, and Unfermented Corn Silage (UCS).  See the information on a revised NIRSC Pricing Structure and Sign Up Form below.

The NIRSC website will be updated shortly to display information on all of our equations.  The new equation descriptions will include the usual parameter lists with equation statistics, but will also include more historical accounts of what exactly makes up our equations.  The NIRSC has been developing our sample database to include information such as species, growing conditions, drying method used, etc. and this information will be included in our equation descriptions. This will provide valuable information to our members in reviewing how an individual lab’s samples would be expected to fit the equations and in determining new information to look for when we update the equations again.

Revised NIRSC Pricing Structure Taking Effect September 1, 2011

The NIRSC Finance Committee developed a new format and pricing structure for NIRSC equations and membership listings.  The committee proposed this new format and structure to the Board of Directors, which approved it on August 30th, 2011.

This new system is aimed to simplify pricing for NIRSC members and to clarify information on our membership categories as well as equation listings.  There are two pages to the pricing structure, which is available at the NIRSC website under Membership.  The first page outlines the price lists.  The second page is a sign up form for equations.

Use this second page to indicate which equations your lab would like and your method of payment, then return to the NIRSC business office.  You will receive an invoice for the items you signed up for OR you may go to the NIRSC website to pay online.  Just go to the left menu and click on Make Payments.  This will direct you to a checkout page to pay for the NIRSC equation packages using a credit card.
